Help the Deaf ?!?!?
Oh dear. The RNId strikes again. There’s an article on The Advertiser Online published today that basically says:
Throughout November the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) are urging people to get involved and help brighten the lives of some of the nine million deaf and hard of hearing people across the UK.
First of all, I didn’t know that my life needed brightening up! Ok granted, this scheme is focused on Deaf people living in care homes and supported housing schemes run by the RNId, but I think it’s just another example of how backward the RNId are in recognising that the Deaf community no longer want pity.
Deaf people don’t need pity, we need action to ensure that we are recognised as equal by hearing people, instead of the “poor deaf and dumb” image that most of British society seem to have.
RNId is now being surpassed by the BDA, which is becoming more pro-active in promoting BSL and shifting the focus from our ears to our hands – there’s nothing wrong with us at all. We’re just a language minority with our own language.
Oh stop it with the pity already! We’re in the 21st century now, not the 19th!
