New blog software

Yes, I’m back! You’re probably wondering why I haven’t posted since 14 June 2005. It’s quite simple really; it transpired that Moveable Type had some serious security holes and it was causing Jon Perkin’s Volubility webserver (which is where I lease my webspace from) to crash on a periodic basis. Oops, sorry Jont!

Anyway, Jont asked me to find and install different blog software, and recommended WordPress. It is based on PHP/mySQL, as opposed to Moveable Type’s Perl/CGI script, so it was slightly more complicated to set up, but now that it’s been set up, I’m able to post once again.

At the present time, I would say I prefer Moveable Type’s interface, as it was more user-friendly than WordPress is at the moment, but on the other hand, it provides a very easy way of deleting unwanted comments (i.e. those bloody spammers), so that’s a bonus. It is easy to edit templates, but relies very heavily on themes, which are usually un-writable, so I can’t seem to edit the theme templates to suit my tastes at the moment. That’s one thing I need to figure out. Also, uploading images is more difficult, but then I could be premature.

I will of course keep you updated on how I get on with WordPress. Hope you enjoy the new look.
