Federation for Deaf People

What has happened to the Federation for Deaf People (FDP)? Their website at fdp.org.uk is down, and we’ve not heard a peep out of them for years.

Are they still in existence? Can anyone answer? Does anyone know?

Seeing as the FDP were instrumental in the BSL marches of 1999, 2001 and 2003, it would be a damn shame if they were to disappear into the echelons of history. The organisation is needed more than ever, as Deaf activism in the UK needs to be re-ignited, to force the Government to enact a BSL Act.

  1. BSL campaigning has imploded, and there are just not the people coming forward now. The writing is on the wall really, it says ‘I can’t be bothered…’

  2. No, MM. The writing on the wall says “I wish I had the energy to do this and I wish there were more people willing to actually help us work rather than posting negative trolling comments on people’s blogs.”

  3. So offering fair comment is trolling ? It was said here, they all fear BSL campaigns are dead, I was agreeing, don’t shoot the messenger cos you don’t like the message.. So prove me wrong .

  4. I think differently….as opposed to your comments…..let’s think what the FDP was really all about in the 1st place?…..Promoting BSL and getting our language recognised by the Govt…..and they achieved that, didn’t they….all that BSL marches were organised by the FDP.

What more were they’re supposed to do……and as to our age old problems with the hearing world continues….speak to RNID, BDA or these organisation that are deaf-related and post some new complaints about what a bum deal we’re having!

Ex-FDP campaigner….cos i was too busy improving the quality of my life!

  5. The problem here is: has the Government really recognised BSL? The department that recognised it was the DWP – what do they have to do with minority languages anyway?! They’re concerned with welfare benefits, not languages. The FDP should be leading the way for a BSL Act to give BSL legal protection.

  6. Since it appears that FDP is no longer active, can anyone tell me what as happened to the money I have been giving them every month for the past few years?
