wow im very suprised the way you guys talk about deaf people.. that very discrimination.. What if your child is deaf and do you rather pay hearing aid or funeral? I wear my hearing aid since i was born and IT VERY WORTH IT!. Sometime child have to take hearing off IF it rain.. do you think hearing aid is waterproof? NOT! IF your child is hearing-loss how will you be able to get your child attention? Do you rather walk a mile to get or you yell at her and make her come?? THINK TWICE. Thanks for reading this... THIS IS VERY IMPORATANT FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED HEARING AID AND LISTEN WHAT THEY NEEDED. if you are not deaf and then you dont need to comment this... PISS OFF!!!!

I always wore my hearing aid when I was a kid. Once I nearly got run over by a lorry, who braked and swerved to avoid me. Why did I miss it? Because it was a high street with lots of feet clacking on the pavement and my auditory senses were overloaded; I heard the lorry but was confused by the sound and stepped out in front of it anyway. Might have used my eyes more if I didn't have the hearing aid in...

I wore an aid for years despite not undertsanding any conversation with it. The point was it could pick up 'noise' I utilised this to alert me to traffic, you use everything you can. Deaf children can't play politics of deafness with their lives, they haven't the wherewithall. If an aid COULD have helped and the deaf person takes it off then gets in a accident, it is a natural assumption it's your own fault. A speeding driver can use that in a court to get away with things. It was probably the parents for not insisting, but even then a child can walk out the door and take it off for a variety of reasons.

Yes Look and Listen...and then walk across the road, carry on look and listen. But when the ears are broken, still use your eyes - even more so....it is a horrific that the girl got run over by a lorry. If you are saying if she was wearing her hearing aid, it could have saved her life. Who knows, it could have. But what is the motivation behind this story? Children can take off their hearing aids and CIs for all sort of reasons - simply because they are children. I still think it a cheap gimmicky tactic.

The coroner quoted the fact the child had delibertaly removed her hearing aid to go out to play, (Against parental request !), and was a contributing factor to her death. It is even more important a deaf individual who can benefit with an aid, WEARS it. The number with hearing is of course higher, but that's simply bacause there are more of them. Road awareness is Look, and Listen....

MM

It is not hearing aids that saves lives - it is road awareness. You talk about one deaf child who dies in Risca(?). What about the hearing children who also die after being run over? What about hundreds of other deaf children still alive? They don't need hearing aids! It is road awareness, for goodness sake! This advert campaign wholly misleading and a cynical tactic to tug on the ignorants' heart strings.

In the cause of 'awareness' it is sometimes neccessary to try and inform hearing people, the pitfalls and issues surrounding being deaf. As we are all agreed the RNID represents hearing people and nobody here is remotely a fan or member, what's the beef ? Many many years ago when I had a hearing aid it was =virtually ear decoration, I couldn't hear anything sp[oken to make sense of, however I did keep it on... WHY ? because it did assist me to hear some sounds, so yes, in that respect it a hearing aid or CI may well save a life on the road, especially for a child. If Rob knows the area (Risca), a deaf child died there, some years ago, run over by a lorry it didn't see or didn't hear, because it took its hearing aid out, who knows if they might not have saved it, had that aid been in ? Try NOT to let your inbuilt abhorrence of the RNID detract from the reality. I see no grounds for consulting the deaf community at all on this. Name one group or set of deaf people anyone of us can accept or recognise to do it that is respected by all ?
